Leura dog owners were left disappointed last week after being advised by Council that a report on Leura oval as a possible dog off leash area was a minimum 3 months away and may not even happen for another 12 months.
Recently, a petition containing over 600 signatures was submitted to Council requesting a suitable off leash dog facility in Leura. Despite a site visit to Leura oval by Council officers and promises from one Councillor that “this is a done deal”, Leura dog owners will have to wait.
“It is unfortunate that Leura oval appears to be the only suitable site in Leura” said Janet Mays, the author of the Leura petition. “Unfortunate because a small group of local residents vehemently oppose the oval being used for this sort of activity and there aren’t any real alternatives”.
“Knowing the history of opposition at Leura oval, our petition didn’t even bother asking for this site. It was Council who selected this site for consideration and then Council who has shut down this option” said Ms Mays.
Leura dog owners are currently confined to a dirt track that runs alongside Leura oval for off leash dog activity. “The track is too short for quality dog exercise and fills with water making it slippery and often impassable during wet weather.
