Media Release - Leura Dog Owners Seek Equity
Mon, Mar 3, 2008
A petition signed by over 600 people that calls on Council to give immediate consideration to the upgrading of leash free dog facilities in Leura, has been submitted to BMCC General Manager, Phil Pinyon.
The petition which was championed by independent candidate for Ward 1, Janet Mays, declares that the current leash free area in Leura is inadequate and fails to meet the needs of Leura dog owners.
Janet’s decision to drive the petition came from what she saw as a constant oversight by Council to meet the needs of Leura dog owners.
“Recent efforts by Council to improve leash free facilities in the Mountains have been half hearted” said Ms Mays.
“Leura was again overlooked for improved leash free dog facilities and the times allocated for other newly determined areas are heavily constrained. The devil is in the detail and once dog owners see the time restrictions imposed by Council they will realise they have been hoodwinked”.
“With a local registered dog population of 25,000, Council needs to find long term solutions for leash free dog activity”.
Janet Mays is hopeful her petition, which was completed in just 20 days, will move Council to act quickly and responsibly in the interests of Leura dog owners.
“This is about fairness and not overlooking the needs of a large number of people within our community”.
